History Of City Park Players.....
Community theatre is alive and well in Central Louisiana!!!
City Park Players will mark the 60th anniversary of continous theatre operations in 2008. The theatre, originally founded in 1938, operated until World War 2 came along. The theatre closed while the citizens joined the rest of the country to concentrate on the war effort. Then in 1948, with the support of visionary community leaders, the theatre reopened and has been bringing the foremeost of live theatre to the Central Louisiana area ever since. It is one of the oldest and most active community theatres in Louisiana.
Central Louisiana Community Theatre (CLCT) operated for several seasons in the Alexandria Community Center and was known as the "Little Theatre". In 1956 a new theatre was built in Bringhurst Park with private funding an volunteer labor and has remained the home of the theatre. In 2000, in recognition of it's 50 plus years of continous operation,Theatre USA and the American Association Of Community Theatre recognized CPP as a Millennium Theatre.
A typical season at CPP consists of 5 - 6 productions. As an oppurtunity and outlet for area residents to participate and enjoy artistic expression, each season's line-up of show's includes a selection from current musicals and plays as well as favorites and classic.
CPP is truly a community theatre in every sense of the word. The names and faces change from time to time but the theatre has been at the same address with the same telephone number since 1956! Life in Louisiana is like no where else. As we continue to grow, we do not want to forget our roots. Without the foresight and passion of our founders of the "Little Theatre" in 1938 and again in 1948, a community theatre might never have started in Central Louisiana. We are indebted to those artistic pioneers.
